Is a Venstre politician using your tax money to pursue private lawsuits? Local politician Peter Hansen (V) has become thoroughly and rather pettily offended. In previous posts on the Facebook page ‘Dybbøl Banke Skansegården’, we used a fine portrait of him when describing some of his achievements as a businessman.
In several articles, we have also pointed out how good he is at combining his political office with personal and business ambitions. The photograph came from Sønderborg Municipality’s press photographs, but the person pictured has now forbidden use of the image. The municipality’s press photographs are otherwise freely available for use in coverage of Sønderborg Municipality.
Since Peter Hansen is a politician in that same municipality, we found it difficult to see why this should cause problems. Sønderborg Municipality had not seen any reason to object either. But Peter had apparently become very upset by all the attention to his person and wanted to stop our use of the photograph.
Normally, he would simply ask his friends at JydskeVestkysten to write something nasty about us. But… that would hardly make this rather ridiculous case less visible to the public. So what do you do if you do not want to pay to have a problem solved yourself?
The taxpayers must pay. Peter Hansen once again displayed creativity and responsibility towards his personal finances. He set Sønderborg Municipality’s administration to work on doing something about it – and, in his usual style, he did not start with the secretary in the press department but asked none other than the municipal chief executive to do something about the problem.
That set a larger machine in motion: besides the municipal chief executive, it also activated the Head of the City Council Secretariat and Legal Affairs, the municipality’s law firm and presumably an army of secretaries – and, on the other side of the redoubt, the owner’s lawyer. The owner naturally has to pay the last person in that line from his own fully taxed funds. The rest of these undoubtedly highly competent and well-paid people receive their income from Sønderborg Municipality.
You have probably worked out the rest. The bill for removing a publicly available photograph from the above-mentioned article naturally falls to you as a taxpayer, and it will be disproportionately large. Nevertheless, it will probably cost only a fraction of what Peter Hansen’s crusade against Skansegården has cost Sønderborg Municipality.
And that case is not yet over. About throwing stones when you live in a glass house. At present, legal proceedings and a possible injunction against using the notorious image are on the cards.
We find it difficult, however, to see that we have broken any rules by using the municipality’s press photographs to cover a local politician. Nothing says that the pictures may only be used for favourable coverage. The current case makes it relevant to recall that Peter Hansen started the campaign against Skansegården and its owner, and that he actually conducted it for many months before we responded.
So Peter, remember that throwing the first 20 stones is really foolish when you live in a glass house yourself and are a little touchy. An incomplete portrait. Finally, we would like to share the short portrait written by JydskeVestkysten’s local editor, Halldor Henriksen (Mr.
Fake News), about the departing local politician and incoming chairman of Jysk Fynske Medier. We do not think Halldor has produced an entirely comprehensive portrait.

We find it difficult, however, to see that we have broken any rules by using the municipality’s press photographs to cover a local politician. Nothing says that the pictures may only be used for favourable coverage. Naturally, we will not use the image going forward, but we have ensured that we have secured the rights to an extensive archive of photographs featuring the same subject.
