84 kilometres along the border coast

Gendarmstien runs from Padborg to Skovby and is currently listed at 84 kilometres. It has five stages: Bjerg, Tegl, Krage, Strand and Mølle. Older 74-kilometre descriptions ended at Høruphav; the trail was extended later. [S02] [S43]

The route connects border country, villages, woods, coast and historic sites. Dybbøl belongs to a wider walking landscape, so a day out can continue beyond the redoubts.

The Strand stage at Dybbøl

The official Strand stage covers 19.2 kilometres from Gammelmark to Høruphav. It passes Vemmingbund, follows Dybbøl’s slopes and Viemosen towards Sønderborg. It then crosses Christian X’s Bridge and follows harbour and coastal stretches towards Høruphav. [S03]

The detour to the mill

At Redoubt I, a farm track leads uphill towards Dybbøl Mill and the History Centre. The main route follows the coast, not the mill’s entrance. The detour adds distance and a climb, so allow time for both walking and visiting. [S03]

High water may affect beach sections. For Gammelmark-Vemmingbund, the route guide describes a road alternative in high water and winter conditions. Follow local advice rather than an old saved route. [S03] [S41]

Water, dogs and bicycles

  • Bring water; water points may be seasonal.
  • Dogs should be on leads.
  • This is a walking trail. Cycling must respect walkers, and some private sections prohibit it.
  • Stay overnight only where rules and designated places permit.

Access is not uniform

The operator rates the Strand stage as easy. That does not guarantee suitability for wheelchairs, walking aids or pushchairs. Surfaces, gradients and coastal conditions vary. Choose a specific checked section when accessibility matters. [S03]
