Why combine the castle with Dybbøl?
Sønderborg Castle’s displays cover the Schleswig wars, German rule and reunification. [S80] They can give a wider context to the landscape you encounter at Dybbøl Banke.
Start with our history of Dybbøl. Check the Historiecenter’s current visitor arrangements before planning your day; our guide explains the ongoing closure and special openings. A question from the museum can give your walk a purpose: What did the war change for people, and how was it remembered afterwards?
A castle with several layers of history
The castle’s history stretches back around 800 years. [S81] Christian II. was imprisoned here from 1532 to 1549. Rebuilding under Christian III. and Queen Dorothea in the 1550s shaped features including the great hall and Renaissance chapel. [S81]
Choose a period that everyone in your group can discuss. Compare a defensive building with a home: Which details offer protection, and which demonstrate power or wealth? You do not need to read every exhibition panel to have a rewarding visit.
The town also experienced 1864
Dybbøl’s wartime history includes the civilians of Sønderborg. The Historiecenter’s account of the bombardment on 2 April 1864 describes the evacuation of stores in Sønderborg Castle. [S82] This gives you a reason to consider the town as part of the story when you leave the museum and walk towards the water.
Exploring with different ages
The museum has family rooms called Hertugens klædeskab and Børneværkstedet. [S80] Invite children to choose one object or detail they would like to explain to the adults. Adults can follow a historical question instead of trying to study the entire museum.
Plan a relaxed day
Check the museum’s official visitor information for opening, admission, parking and activities. [S80] Contact the museum about access if stairs, mobility aids or other requirements determine whether a visit will work for you.
Combine the castle with a break beside Alssund and one main visit at Dybbøl. Use our area map for the Dybbøl part and the Sønderborg guide for the rest of your day. Leave room in your return journey for an unhurried family break.
