Five mills on the same site
Dybbøl Mill is not a single building that survived every war unchanged. The first mill was built in 1744. Lightning, wartime destruction and fire led to successive rebuilding. Today’s fifth mill dates from 1936, following the fire of 1935. Milling continued until 1990, and the mill became a museum in 1995. [S12]
The people behind the symbol
The mill was also a home and workplace. Jørgen and Margrethe Hansen experienced the war at close quarters and had to leave in March 1864. The mill was destroyed on 10 April, eight days before the assault on the redoubts. The family and their work offer a human way into a story often told through military events. [S12]
What can you experience?
The exhibitions explore the people at the mill, its successive buildings, the struggle over it and its role as a place of remembrance. Look for the connection between its machinery and the familiar image of the white mill in the landscape. [S27]
For children, a simple question is a useful starting point: how does grain become flour? History enthusiasts can compare the current building with earlier mills and wartime photographs. An image from 1864 does not show the building standing today.
Visiting the mill
The 2026 season runs until 31 October. Regular hours are 10am-4pm; the autumn holiday period, 10-18 October, is listed as 10am-5pm. The planned opening for 2027 is 20 March. Published adult admission is DKK 70, with free entry for children aged 5-17. Check current hours and prices before travelling. [S46] [S47] [S04]
The operator describes the exhibition on the first level as accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, while the second level is harder to reach. Ask about the exact route if stairs or changes in level are a concern. [S46]
Explore the landscape too
The mill makes most sense alongside the redoubts, graves and view towards Vemmingbund. Allow time to see the places behind the stories. The mill and History Centre have separate opening arrangements: the centre’s renovation closure does not mean the mill is closed as well. [S04]
