A landscape shaped by ice
Dybbøl Banke lies in moraine country around Vemmingbund. The heights offer views of the fjord and Sønderborg; Dybbøl Bjerg is listed at 68 metres above sea level. Consider heights, hollows, coast and water together: they explain both nature and the location of the fighting. [S09] [S08]
Dybbølstenen and local legends
Dybbølstenen, also called Barstenen, is a large boulder transported by ice. GEUS gives dimensions of approximately 8.8 by 6.7 metres, a height exceeding 2.7 metres and an estimated weight around 250 tonnes. Stories of giants and children emerging from the stone are legends, not geological explanations. [S10]
Children can compare sizes and consider what a glacier can move. For adults, the stone opens a story much older than the redoubts.
Wildlife and habitats
Naturstyrelsen describes hare, fox, skylark, tree frog and waterbirds at Viemosen. Woods, scrub, grassland and small wetlands create different habitats. The guide also mentions coppiced woodland, orchids and fungi. A species description is not a guarantee of seeing it on the day. [S40]
Walk slowly and listen. Birdsong, flowers, wind and water can matter as much as monuments. Keep to paths in sensitive places and leave wildlife undisturbed.
Grazing reveals history
Sheep and cattle help keep the earthworks open. Management makes the ground easier to read while supporting habitats. Naturstyrelsen’s guide describes organic farming on state land from 1997. [S40] [S09]
A changing coast
Slopes may erode and slip. Gendarmstien’s guidance explains that high water and easterly storms can affect coastal sections around Sønderborg and Vemmingbund. Paths may change; follow current instructions. [S41]
The recent municipal permission for coastal protection at Dybbølstrand 1 and 2 shows this remains an active issue. A permission records a decision, not necessarily completed construction. [S42]
Visiting through the year
Spring offers new leaves and flowers; summer walks require water and sun protection; autumn and winter may offer open views and more wind. These are ways to enjoy the landscape, not a fixed wildlife calendar. Current conditions determine the walk.
